RAFFAELLO: THE BANNER OF THE HOLY TRINITY

The banner of the Holy Trinity is an oil painting on canvas by Raphael (166x94 cm each side), dating from around 1499 and preserved in the Municipal Gallery of Cittą di Castello. It is one of the first works attributed to the artist, as well as the one of Raphael's painting remained in Cittą di Castello, where the artist worked in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century.

The processional banner was painted for the church of Citta di Castello Trinity, sometime during the stay of the young painter, who went to Citta di Castello in place of his father, who died in 1494. Here, following the departure of Luca Signorelli, scarce talented artists, so it was easy for the promising artist, porter still a style of Perugino, receiving numerous commissions.

The banner, in poor condition, was originally painted on both sides, which today are separated and displayed alongside the one hand there are depicted the Trinity with the Saints Rocco and Sebastian (recto) and on the other side of the Creation Eva (verso).

Surprising freshness of the work even if they are still very obvious debts to Perugino (in the soft hills, the symmetrical between angels fluttering ribbons) and Luca Signorelli (volumetric approaches). New however, is the security in the arrangement of figures in space, much more coherent than in his teachers.
